An Act to Amend the Education Act

His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, enacts as follows:

1 Section 1 of the Education Act, chapter E-1.12 of the Acts of New Brunswick, 1997, is amended by adding the following definition in alphabetical order:

“French immersion pathway” means an educational program, provided by a school within a school district organized in the English language, in which instruction is primarily provided in the French language for the purpose of second language instruction; (parcours d’immersion en français)

2 The Act is amended by adding after section 6.1 the following:

French immersion pathway

6.2( 1) The superintendent concerned may, in accordance with any provincial policies established by the Minister, implement a French immersion pathway in a school.

6.2( 2) Subject to subsection (3), a pupil who is enrolled in a French immersion pathway may begin in grade 1 or grade 6.

6.2( 3) The superintendent concerned may, on request of the parent of a pupil, permit a pupil to begin the French immersion pathway at a different grade than those listed in subsection (2).
